Honorary Chairman: US Senator Christopher J. Dodd
Since 1992, Connecticut SAFE KIDS has distributed child safety
materials and education to raise awareness regarding the number one
threat to children: unintentional injury. The Connecticut SAFE KIDS
Coalition distributes this lifesaving information through hospitals,
health departments, police, fire and emergency medical service
agencies as well as schools and day care programs.
Connecticut SAFE KIDS Coalition members are dedicated to reducing
the major causes of injury to Connecticut's youth including:
- Traffic Injuries (including motor vehicle occupants,
bicyclists and pedestrians)
- Home Related Injuries (falls, burns, drowning, poisonings)
- Recreational Injuries (playground, sports)
In 1996, the Connecticut SAFE KIDS Coalition received the
National SAFE KIDS Campaign "Outstanding Coalition Award". In 1998
the Coalition received the "Best Regional Safety Program" award from
Allstate Insurance. In 2001, the Coalition received another National
SAFE KIDS award for "Best Targeted Education Publication." In 2002,
Connecticut SAFE KIDS Coalition received the Outstanding Performance
Award from Bell Sports. In 2003, Connecticut was the recipient of
the Education and Prevention Award from the Brain Injury Association
of Connecticut, Inc. In 2004, Connecticut SAFE KIDS Coalition again
received the Outstanding Performance Award from Bell Sports.
Connecticut SAFE KIDS Coalition members host a variety of
community safety programs that may include:
- Car Seat Safety Checks
- Bicycle Rodeos
- Smoke Alarm Campaigns
- Pedestrian Safety Programs
- Child Safety Fairs
In addition, Coalition members advocate for passage and
improvement of child safety related legislation. Members were
integral in passing the current Bicycle Helmet legislation and
continue to pursue upgrades in our child passenger safety
legislation.
Since 1999, the Elks of Connecticut have been the major sponsor
of the Connecticut SAFE KIDS Coalition, providing funding for safety
materials to be distributed with education throughout the state.
