Pedestrian Safety

The Facts

pedestrain_safety.jpgFor children ages 5 to 19, unintentional pedestrian injuries are the 5th leading cause of injury related death in the United States. Teens are at the greatest risk, with a death rate twice that of younger children.

Safe Kids Tips

  • Teach your kids that it is best to walk on sidewalks and to cross at street corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.
  • Remind your children that it is important to stop texting or using other devices while crossing the street. Always look both ways and make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.
  • Young children under age 10 should always be accompanied by an adult while crossing the street.
  • Drive carefully in residential neighborhoods, school zones and parking lots. Be on the lookout for pedestrians and bikers who may be in your path. Always use your rearview mirrors and check behind your should to make sure it is clear to back up your car.
